How to clean a pool screen enclosure

Short answer

Wash a screen enclosure with low pressure and chemistry, not high pressure. Use a soft wash mix under about 500 psi, or a pump sprayer and a soft brush, working top down from the frame to the mesh. High pressure tears screen and drives water into the frame. Most Florida cages need it once a year.

The mistake here is almost always the same one: somebody points a real pressure washer at the mesh. Screen is not concrete. It comes clean with chemistry and patience at pressure low enough that you could hold your hand in front of the nozzle.

What is the best way to clean a pool screen enclosure?

Soft wash it: a cleaning solution applied at low pressure, a few minutes of dwell time, then a gentle rinse from the top down. The chemistry does the work that pressure would otherwise do to your panels.

Start with the aluminum framing, because that is where most of the dirt you can see actually is, then rinse the mesh. The step by step is below.

Can you pressure wash a pool screen enclosure?

Not with high pressure. Screen mesh is held in a channel by a rubber spline, and high pressure does two things, both bad. It stretches or tears the mesh itself, and it pushes the spline out of the channel so the panel goes slack and eventually falls out.

A torn panel costs more to fix than the wash was ever going to cost you. Keep it under about 500 psi, or skip the pressure washer for the mesh entirely and use a pump sprayer and a soft brush.

What should I use to clean my screen enclosure?

A soft wash detergent or a diluted bleach based cleaner, applied with a pump sprayer or a low pressure washer. Read the label and mix it the way it says, not stronger.

Two cautions. Soak the plants around the base before and after, because wet foliage does not absorb the runoff. And handle the chemicals properly: store them cool and dry and never mix products, which is the same advice the CDC gives for pool chemicals.

Should I clean the frame or the screen first?

The frame. The green and black streaking people notice is mostly on the aluminum framing, not the screen. Wash the frame top down and most of the visual problem is gone before you have touched a panel. The mesh itself usually just needs rinsing once the runoff from the frame has stopped dirtying it.

How often should a screen enclosure be cleaned in Florida?

Once a year for most cages here. Shaded yards and anything under heavy tree cover go faster and can want it every eight months or so. If the frame has gone properly black rather than streaked, it has been longer than a year.

Many people do the cage on the same day as the pool deck and driveway, since the setup is already there. See pressure cleaning and how often to pressure wash driveways.

Will cleaning the screen enclosure hurt my pool?

Not if you plan for it. Some cleaner will get into the water. It is not a disaster, but test and rebalance afterward, and shock if you used a bleach based mix. If you can, wash the cage the day before the pool is serviced.

When does a screen enclosure need repair instead of cleaning?

When panels are torn, slack, or the spline is creeping out of the channel. Cleaning will not fix any of that, and washing a loose panel can finish it off.

While you are washing, look along the channels. A panel that has just started to pull loose is a quick fix now and a full panel later. That is screen repair.

How to wash a screen enclosure safely

Time: 3 hoursYou need: Soft wash detergent, Bleach based cleaner, Pump sprayer or low pressure washer, Soft bristle brush, Garden hose, Extension pole
  1. 1

    Soak the plants first

Wet everything growing around the base of the cage before you start and again when you finish. Wet foliage does not absorb the runoff.

  2. 2

Cover the pool or plan to shock it

Cleaner will get into the water. It is not a disaster, but expect to rebalance and shock afterward if the pool is open underneath.

  3. 3

Wash the frame from the top down

Start at the highest beams and work down so dirty runoff never crosses a section you already cleaned. The framing is where most of the discoloration actually is.

  4. 4

Keep the pressure low on the mesh

Stay under about 500 psi, or use a pump sprayer and a soft brush. If you would not point it at a car door, do not point it at screen.

  5. 5

    Let the chemistry sit

Give the cleaner a few minutes of dwell time rather than trying to blast the growth off. Time does the work that pressure would otherwise do to your panels.

  6. 6

    Rinse thoroughly, top down

Rinse the whole cage and the deck beneath it, then rinse the landscaping again. Anything left to dry on the aluminum will show as streaks.

  7. 7

Check the spline while you are there

Look along the channels for spline that has crept out or panels that have gone slack. Catching that now is a twenty minute repair rather than a full panel later.

Quick answers

How do you clean an aluminum pool cage frame?
With the same low pressure soft wash: apply the cleaner from the top down, let it sit a few minutes without drying, then rinse. Most of the black streaking on a cage is on the frame, so do the frame before the screen.
Can I pressure wash a screen enclosure myself?
You can wash it yourself, but not with high pressure. A pump sprayer, a soft brush and a hose is the safe version. The moment you bring a real pressure washer to the mesh you are risking panels.
Will the cleaner hurt my pool water?
Some will get in. Plan on testing and rebalancing afterward, and shock it if you used a bleach based mix.
How much does it cost to have a cage washed?
It is priced on the size of the enclosure. Bundled with a pool deck or driveway wash it comes down, since the setup is already there. Quotes are free.
Why is my screen enclosure turning black?
Mildew and algae growing on the aluminum framing, helped along by shade and humidity. It washes off with a soft wash, and comes back slower if the cage gets done once a year.
