How long do pool screens last in Florida?

Short answer

Pool screen mesh in South Florida usually lasts roughly a decade before sun, storms and pets wear it out, and the aluminum cage frame lasts much longer than the mesh. Torn single panels can be replaced as they go. When many panels are brittle, sagging or torn at once, a full rescreen is the better spend.

Screen mesh lives a hard life here. It sits in full sun all year, takes every summer storm, and gets leaned on by kids, dogs and falling branches. The frame usually outlives it by a long way. Here is how long each part lasts, the signs it is time, and how to decide between fixing panels and redoing the cage.

How long do pool screens last in Florida?

Roughly a decade for the mesh, give or take, depending on how much sun the cage gets, how many storms it takes and whether pets push on it. Heavier pet resistant mesh tends to last longer in the lower panels where dogs and kids lean.

How long does a pool cage frame last?

Much longer than the screen, often decades, if it is kept up. The weak points are the screws and fasteners, which corrode, especially near salt air. Loose or rusted screws are worth replacing before a storm finds them.

When should a pool cage be rescreened?

When the mesh is failing in many places at once. The signs:

  • Brittle mesh that tears when you press it.
  • Several torn or loose panels at the same time.
  • Sagging panels and spline popping out of the frame.
  • Faded, chalky mesh that has lost its color.
  • A storm that went through several sections.

Should I repair a panel or rescreen the whole cage?

Repair when it is one or two panels on mesh that is otherwise sound. Rescreen when it is several sections on an aging cage, because chasing individual panels on old mesh turns into a monthly job. Either way, fix small tears fast. In the wind they flap, grow, and start pulling on the panel around them. Both are part of our screen repair.

Can you tan through a pool screen?

Yes, and you can burn through one. Screen mesh blocks some of the sun but not all of it, so you tan more slowly under a cage than in the open, not safely. Sunscreen still matters under a screen, and more so in the water, where the light bounces back up at you off the surface and the deck.

How do I make pool screens last longer?

Clean them gently and fix damage early.

Does a screen enclosure help the pool?

A lot. It keeps out leaves, bugs, frogs and lizards, so the water has less debris eating chlorine, the filter stays cleaner and the pool stays clear more easily. A torn panel lets all of that back in.

Green down every beam and the mesh had gone gray. Frames and screens both, and the yard opened right up.

Quick answers

What is spline?
The rubber cord that holds the mesh in the frame channel. When it shrinks or pops out, the panel sags or comes loose, and it gets replaced in a repair.
Does pet screen last longer?
Pet resistant mesh is thicker and stands up better to claws and leaning, so it often holds up longer in the lower panels.
Should I rescreen before or after hurricane season?
Fix torn and loose panels before the season. A full rescreen on an old cage is best done before storms find the weak spots.
