Sometimes the stain is not on the plaster, it is in it. Brushing will not touch that. An acid wash drains the pool and takes off a thin layer of the surface, and the color underneath comes back.

What is included

  • Strips algae and metal staining
  • Brings the plaster color back
  • Good before a party or a listing

One acid wash, start to finish

  1. Drained swimming pool with heavy green algae across the floor and walls before an acid wash in Lake Worth FL1
    Drained, and it was everywhere
  2. Acid wash underway on a pool wall, one stripped clean panel beside the untreated stained plaster2
    First panel stripped clean
  3. The same pool fully acid washed down to fresh even plaster and ready to refill in Lake Worth FL3
    Clean plaster, ready to fill

Step by step

  1. 1

Drain it and clear it out

The pool is pumped down and everything on the floor comes out: leaves, silt, whatever the last storm left. A wash only works on bare, clean plaster.

  2. 2

    Wash it in sections

The acid solution is worked across the plaster one section at a time, so no patch sits under it longer than it should. The stain comes off with the thin top layer.

  3. 3

    Neutralize and rinse

Each section is neutralized and rinsed completely, so nothing acidic is left on the surface or pooled in the deep end when the water goes back in.

  4. 4

    Refill

The pool fills back up. If you are on a well, this is the step where the fill water matters most, more on that below.

  5. 5

    Balance it

The new water is tested and balanced before anyone gets in. Start to finish is usually two to three days.

What a pool acid wash costs

Free quote after a quick look. Price depends on pool size and plaster condition.

When a pool actually needs one

The usual case is a pool that went green, got chemically cleared, and still looks gray and blotchy afterward. The water is fine but the plaster kept the memory of it. Same thing with a dark waterline ring, or leaf stains that sat on the floor all summer. If that is what you are looking at, and the plaster still feels smooth under your hand, washing it will work.

What a wash does not do is rebuild the surface. It takes the stain out of the plaster. It does not put plaster back.

How long an acid wash takes

Usually two to three days from draining to swimming. It goes in this order:

  • Day one: the pool is drained and the debris comes out, then the plaster is washed in sections, neutralized and rinsed.
  • Refill: the pool fills back up, which takes as long as your hose or your well takes.
  • Balance: the fresh water gets its chemistry set before anyone swims, because new water on freshly washed plaster needs to start out right.

Figure a day of actual work plus refill time.

Acid wash or resurfacing?

Run a hand across the plaster. If it is smooth and the problem is the color, a wash will help. If it feels rough or chalky, or it is flaking and showing gray patches underneath, the plaster itself is worn out, and no wash is going to fake that. Washing thin plaster only takes off what little is left.

Richie will tell you plainly if your plaster is too far gone for a wash to be worth paying for. We do not do resurfacing, so there is nothing to sell you instead; you just get the honest answer before anything is drained. The longer version is in acid wash or resurface your pool.

Well water and the staining it leaves

A lot of properties in Loxahatchee and The Acreage fill from a well, and well water carries iron and other metals. Those metals settle into plaster as tan, brown or gray staining that looks like dirt but will not brush off.

Two things are worth knowing before you book a wash for it. Some metal staining lifts with the pool still full, using ascorbic acid and a sequestrant, so a wash is not always the first step; removing well water stains from a pool shows how to tell. And a freshly washed pool refilled straight from the same well starts staining again almost immediately. If you are on a well, we talk about treating the refill water before the pool is drained, not after.

After a green pool

Sometimes the water is clear again but the pool still looks gray and blotchy, because the algae stained the plaster while it was there. That is exactly what a wash is for. If the water is still green, the wash has to wait: start with a green pool cleanup, get the water clear, then look at what the plaster is left with.

Questions we hear a lot

How often can a pool be acid washed?
Every wash takes off a little plaster, so most surfaces have two or three in them over a lifetime. If yours is too thin to wash again we will say so rather than take the job.
Can you acid wash a saltwater pool?
Yes. What matters is the plaster, not what you use to sanitize. The salt cell and the rest of the equipment get handled normally.
How much does a pool acid wash cost?
It depends on the size of the pool and the shape the plaster is in, so it is quoted after a look. The quote is free, and if the plaster is too far gone for a wash to help you will hear that first. Call or text (561) 252 8487.
How long until we can swim again?
Usually two to three days start to finish, counting the drain, the wash, the refill and getting the water balanced.
Will an acid wash remove the waterline ring?
Usually, when the ring is staining in the plaster. Hard white crust on the tile line is something else, calcium left behind by evaporation, and a wash is not the fix for that.
Does an acid wash get rid of algae?
It removes the staining algae leaves in the plaster. Live algae in the water is a different job, and it comes first: a green pool gets cleared, then the plaster gets looked at.
Do I need to be home for an acid wash?
Not the whole time. We need a way through the gate to the pool and the equipment, and we go over the plan and the timing with you before the pool is drained.
