Short answer
Clean or backwash the filter when the pressure gauge reads about 8 to 10 psi above its clean starting pressure. In a Florida summer that is often every week or two for a cartridge filter. Sand filters are backwashed, DE filters are backwashed and recharged with fresh DE, and cartridges are pulled and hosed off.
The filter is the part of the pool nobody looks at until the water goes cloudy. In Florida it catches pollen, leaves, dust and dead algae all year, and a loaded filter is one of the most common reasons a pool goes dull even when the chemistry is right. Here is how to know when it needs cleaning and how to do it.
How often should you clean a pool filter?
When the pressure says so: about 8 to 10 psi above the reading right after a clean. Write the clean pressure on the filter so you know. In summer, after storms or after an algae bloom, that comes around fast, often every week or two for a cartridge.
On our weekly pool service, the filter gets cleaned every visit.
How do you clean a cartridge filter?
Turn the pump off, open the air relief valve, pull the cartridge and hose it off between the pleats from the top down. Every few months, or after algae, soak it in a filter cleaner too. The steps are below.
Can you pressure wash a pool filter cartridge?
No. A pressure washer tears the filter fabric and flattens the pleats, and a damaged cartridge lets dirt straight through. A garden hose with a spray nozzle is enough.
How often should you backwash a sand filter?
At the same 8 to 10 psi rise. Do not backwash on a schedule just to be safe. A sand filter actually traps finer dirt when it is a little dirty, and every backwash sends pool water out. Rinse after backwashing if your valve has a rinse setting.
How long do pool filter cartridges last?
Often a year or two with regular cleaning. Replace it when the fabric is torn or fraying, the end caps crack, the pleats collapse, or the pressure stays high right after a good cleaning.
Why is my pool filter pressure high?
Usually a dirty filter. Clean it first. If the pressure is still high on a clean filter, look for a partly closed valve on the return side or a clogged cartridge that needs replacing. Low pressure is the opposite problem: a clogged skimmer or pump basket, a low water level, or air getting into the pump.
Should I run the filter all the time?
In a Florida summer, long hours, and around the clock when you are clearing algae. Most pools do not need 24 hours a day otherwise, especially with a variable speed pump on low. See how long should a pool pump run in Florida, which also covers the energy side from ENERGY STAR.
How to clean a cartridge filter
- 1
Turn the pump off
Switch the pump off at the timer or breaker so it cannot start while the filter is open.
- 2
Release the pressure
Open the air relief valve on top of the filter until the gauge reads zero.
- 3
Pull the cartridge
Open the filter housing and lift the cartridge out. Check it for tears and cracked end caps.
- 4
Hose it off
Spray between the pleats from the top down until the water runs clear. Do not use a pressure washer.
- 5
Soak it now and then
Every few months, or after algae, soak the cartridge in a filter cleaner and rinse it.
- 6
Put it back and restart
Reinstall the cartridge, close the housing, start the pump and bleed the air until water comes out. Note the new clean pressure.
Quick answers
- Why is my pool cloudy after cleaning the filter?
- A little cloudiness right after a clean can happen while the filter beds back in. If it lasts, check that the cartridge or grids are seated properly and not torn.
- Should I clean the filter after shocking?
- Yes, after shocking to kill algae. The filter catches the dead algae, and a clogged filter slows the clearing down.
- Can I clean a filter with the pump running?
- Never open a filter with the pump running. Turn it off and release the pressure first.
